Affiliate marketing is a game of numbers. The more traffic you drive to your affiliate offers, and the better targeted they are, the better chance you have of making money online. But just like any business, you have got to set a minimum standard on products that you are willing to promote. That’s what most affiliates learn the hard way. You can always go on and promote those products that give you 75% in commissions. But the size of your commission check should not be the main driver for your business.

As someone who’s been involved in the affiliate marketing world for years, I can tell you that there is nothing more embarrassing about promoting a product that is terrible in quality. No matter how expensive or cheap a product, you should always take time and do your own research before promoting an affiliate product. Some folks don’t focus too much on writing reviews for affiliate products, but even if you are a pure PPC affiliate marketer, you are still going to have to pay attention to the quality of what your promoting. You can spend thousands of dollars generating sales just to have folks return the product, leaving you with a massive PPC bill and no profits.

Reputation and trust are much more important than money in the affiliate marketing world. If you have a very good reputation and have gained your audience’s trust, you can always make money promoting the right products. But if you sacrifice your reputation for quick cash in the short-run, you are going to end up losing the war.

Whether you are a newbie in the affiliate marketing world or an experienced super affiliate, you should never cut corners when it comes to sampling the affiliate products you are promoting. You might assume that super affiliates know this simple fact already. But I can’t tell you how many times I have seen super affiliates promote a terrible product to their lists, only to back track and apologize for doing it. As an affiliate marketer, you should never put yourself in that position. The damage that your reputation takes can’t be undone that easily. Everybody makes mistakes, and you may get away with promoting a sub par product once in a while. But your audience is smart, and it is going to realize what you are up to after a couple of missteps. You may get some quick cash in the short-run but your business is doomed in the long run. If you are trying to build up an affiliate business to make a living, you may as well focus on long-term success than quick short-term cash.
