Many assume that affiliate marketing is a super easy way to make money online. After all, if you can slap banners on a web page, you can make money online, right? Most experienced affiliates know that is not to make real money in this business. Top affiliates are always working on new products/services or portals to increase their earnings. But I have met a few who are quite comfortable with the blueprint they have come up with and don’t take time to make changes to it. Unfortunately, things do not always stay the same in the affiliate marketing world. If you are not innovating you are going to get left behind.

Markets and products come and go. So do affiliate programs. Even if you have achieved high conversion rates with the products you are promoting today, there is no guarantee that will continue. The release of new technologies always provide new affiliates to change the game. As a top affiliate, you want to keep your eyes open to make sure you don’t fall behind.

Some affiliates assume that they can make money while spending the majority of their time at the beach. That might work for a small group of established affiliates but even that is pushing it. Hard work is required in order to succeed in this business.

Many of us are too attached to our work and assume that merchants have been waiting all this time to work with us. Unfortunately, that is not really the case in reality. Affiliates get rejected by merchants on a daily basis. Some merchants do not like to work with affiliates who may not bring a whole lot to the table. If your application has been rejected, you still can take time to make your websites better and reapply in the future. Here are some of the things you want to do to get approved:

make sure it is not a mistake: mistakes happen all the time. Merchants may miss your main site and reject you because of that. If you believe you have been rejected by mistake, there is no reason not to contact your merchant again.

read the terms and conditions: many affiliate programs tell you beforehand what they expect you to do for them. By reading their requirements, you will have an easier time figuring out what to do to get approved.

learn from other successful affiliates: the best way to figure out what you are doing wrong is by looking at what others are doing right. Looking up the top affiliates for the merchants you want to work with can give you some ideas.

don’t cut corners: just getting approved to an affiliate program won’t make you a millionaire overtime. By not cutting corners, you will give your business the best chance to succeed over the long run.

Getting rejected by a merchant is not the end of the world. There are always many others you can work with. Learning lessons from each setback is the most important part of the process.

In case you have not been paying attention, you have realized by now that affiliate tax is going to come to most states. The lawmakers are looking for a tax legislation for the whole country. But it is not clear when such legislation will make it to the books. Let’s face it. The current economic conditions in the U.S. are very unfriendly towards affiliates. Companies you have worked for to generate leads for can kick you out in a very short period of time. It is always better to be prepared just in case the worst case scenario happens in your state. Here are 5 ways to do just that:

create products: affiliate marketing is a nice way to get yourself familiar with how product makers go about making their products and learning about the ins and outs of marketing. At the same time, affiliates need to look for ways to become truly their own bosses. Making and selling your own product is the only way to do that.

work on membership sites: if you are making money from blogging (using affiliate products), you may want to consider starting a membership site to hedge your bets.

write books: this is something that can be done fairly quickly if you have truly mastered your niche. This is the perfect place to start if you are running short on time and want to have a generate a new revenue stream for your business fast.

create more content: there are plenty of folks who make money from services such as Adsense. In order to do so, you are going to need a lot of traffic and a lot of content. Starting your video blog or more sites could give you the chance to do just that.

diversify your affiliate promotions: don’t want to do any of the above? You can still make a decent living as long as you don’t put all your eggs in one basket with your affiliate promotions.

The issue of affiliate tax will soon be addressed nationwide. How soon? With states in trouble, the Internet tax will be an easy way out for the lawmakers. Better prepare for it when you have the time.

Making money from affiliate websites is not as easy as some portrays it to be. You can achieve a lot of success by optimizing your paid campaigns. But services such as Adwords can end up costing you a fortune as your market gets more crowded. Focusing on your content and other promotion channels can help you manage your costs per conversion. Here are 5 ways to stay on the right track with your affiliate portal:

stay focused: an affiliate portal that is all over the place won’t make you a whole lot of money. There are plenty of attractive affiliate offers around. That does not mean you should fit them all on one single website.

offer unique content: there are too many affiliate websites that just copy what others have said about certain goods and services. Creating unique and honest reviews goes a long way towards helping you build a more successful portal.

aggregate others’ works: while you do not want to parrot what others have said about a certain product, you can always aggregate them all and compare them to save your visitors time.

focus on SEO: if you have a ton of money to spend on advertising, you will have more flexibility to test things out using advertising platforms. Search engine optimization may not provide you with instant results, but it can help you reduce your costs and get more leads.

don’t forget complementary products: let’s say you have made a portal about digital cameras. There is no reason not to branch out and tackle niches such as telescopes, digital SLRs, lenses, and …

Building a complete affiliate portal can take a lot of time. But you can think of the time you spend on doing it as a long-term investment in your business. Parroting what others have said about products without adding your own unique content won’t get you anywhere.

Affiliate marketing is not as simple as some make it to be. It is more than just slapping products on your pages and cashing your checks at the end of each month. Just like any other business, affiliate marketers will have to keep track of their progress, manage their relationships with their partners, and approach their business as a business and not a hobby. These 5 tips could help newbie affiliates do just that:

keep Up with new products: every product has a life cycle. Affiliate products can be very hot at the start but they do slow down over the long run. Even if you find the best affiliate product in the world (with amazing conversion rates), you can’t just sit on your success. By watching out for the latest affiliate products, you can catch them while they are hot.

use our own URL shortener: many newbie affiliates choose bit.ly or other third party URL shorteners to manage their affiliate links. That could lead to huge headaches especially if you choose the wrong partner to go with. Once your portal has more than a thousand affiliate links, you are going to become completely dependent on those third party services. Then, you will have to pray for your partner to stay in business for as long as you are in business or send hours or days changing your links back.

test affiliate ads: no matter how great an affiliate product is, you should always test multiple products against each other to see which one performs the best. Testing different offers can give you a better sense what your audience is more open to. Testing can increase your revenue over the long run, which is the whole point of being a serious affiliate.

keep track of your payments: so you work hard to earn money from multiple affiliate programs? In a perfect world, your affiliate partner would pay you month in and month out, on time. That is not always the case. You would not know that unless you track your monthly payments and compare them with your own internal statistics.

learn from your competitors: have no idea how to grow your affiliate business? If others are making money in your niche, you can always learn from their tactics. Just by looking at their ads over the long run, you can get an idea which ads are performing for them the best. Spying on your competitors is a good way to save some time and identify new opportunities for your business.

Being a serious affiliate marketer is not all that easy. The above tips should help affiliates keep their business on track and growing all the time.

We have all been there before. You pick up a product that is very popular and is performing very well according affiliate networks but fails to generate good enough results for your business. Sometimes, you can blame that on inaccurate information provided to you by your affiliate partner. But that is not always the case. In most cases, there are things you can do to improve your affiliate campaigns before dropping them. Here are 5 ways how:

Reach out to affiliate manager: starting an affiliate business is not about putting yourself in a room and just building websites (or promoting offers). There is a lot of value to reaching out to your affiliate manager to find out about ways you can improve your campaigns. How much value you get out of your conversation with your affiliate manager depends on how much are you willing to listen and whether there is someone decent on the other side. In most cases, affiliate managers want to help you become more successful. There is no reason not too. You’ll never know if you don’t reach out.

Ask for latest creative: relying on creative and banners offered through affiliate networks can slow down your testing process. Not all affiliate programs have the time to upload their new banners to their networks as they come up with them. Never hesitate to ask for specific banners if you want to test your partner’s offers more effectively.

Spy on other players: you want to learn how others are making money from the same product you intend to sell? See what they are doing on Google, Twitter, and Facebook. Tools such as SpyFu can give you a wealth off information on how to promote certain products.

Test different offers: don’t just put a bunch of banners on your website and hope for the best. Test different offers. Let’s say you are working with a cell phone company. Don’t just promote their most popular phone. Test different things out and make decisions accordingly.

Pounce on opportunities: merchants often send limited time coupons and promotions to their affiliates. Just get those offers out before it’s too late. Experienced affiliates have mastered this art. At first, you may make some mistakes pushing offers you get right-away. But once you do this enough times, you’ll learn how you can take advantage of these offers before it is too late.

Starting and building a successful affiliate business takes work. But make sure you use all the resources made available to you by your partners before dropping your under-performing campaigns.

Twitter is a great tool for affiliate marketers who want to take their business to the next level. Twitter gives marketers a great way to reach out to their prospects and industry leaders. So unless you like wasting your time talking about what you have had for lunch on Twitter time and time again, you want to use your time on Twitter to connect with prospects and build a real following. Here are 5 ways to do just that:

Focus on your keywords, hashtags, ..: if you want to get recognition in your niche, you want to pick your keywords wisely and work your way towards building a following that is interested in what you talk about and offer. So choose the right keywords and don’t forget about #hashtags.

Laser Target those you are following: it is OK to follow a bunch of people in the start to get your Twitter account off the ground and running. But you want to make sure you follow people who are involved in your niche or somehow related to it. Don’t just follow everyone under the sun. That dilutes the focus on your Twitter page.

Focus on retweetable content: if you are not getting retweets on Twitter, it will be hard for you to present yourself as a player in your niche. It is not really rocket science. See what stories people are tweeting are getting love from Twitter community and try to learn from what they are doing right.

Retweet other people’s work: you want people to give your stories some love? You want to retweet their work too. There is no reason to be stingy with your retweets when you find articles worth retweeting.

Do not follow everyone!: you should not follow everyone nor should you follow back everyone. There are a lot of spammers on Twitter who follow people to get them to follow them back. They will probably unfollow you after a while anyway. Your goal is to build a Twitter profile that people can refer to for information on your niche. If you want to talk about personal things on your Twitter profile or follow your friends, just use a personal account and not your niche Twitter account.

Twitter can be a great traffic driver if you laser target those you follow and position your material to get retweets from your followers. You won’t have to spend a fortune to implement this strategy.

Many new affiliates assume that affiliate marketing is all about finding the right formula and stick with it till the end of time. In reality, top affiliates change their tactics all the time and take on new challenges every once in a while. If you want to expand your business and keep taking your business to the next level, you are going to have innovate and do it on a consistent basis. The difference at the top comes down to who’s willing to push the envelop and get out of his/her comfort zone.

The affiliate success formula is simple on paper but it is a bible you can memorize and be done with it. Things change quickly in this business, which is why being on your toes all the time is a must. Here are just 5 ways you can boost your affiliate business today:

What’s in it for them: we all want to make money, right? People don’t get in this business to be some sort of a saint without any need for cash. By providing value to your visitors, you can build credibility and relationships with others. Those are assets that can be duplicated easily and things you can count on over the long run.

Focus on videos: many affiliates are uncomfortable with new technologies. Let’s take videos. Many affiliates don’t know how to create killer videos or how to use them to sell products. That’s your opportunity. The sooner you jump on these types of technology, the better off you are.

Podcasting and other types of content matter too: creating your own podcast, membership site, or even an e-book can help you get more recognition and take your business to the next level.

Help people make better decisions: so you want to make it big selling Amazon and Buy.com products? No problem. It is always helpful for your visitors to have a way to compare similar products and choose the right one for them. That’s where you come in. Want to sell SLR cameras? Educate people and show them how they can choose the right product for their situation.

Sell people with your free products: everybody loves free products. Plenty of top affiliate marketers have expanded their lists and taken their business to another level by giving products for free and upselling people. You’d be amazed what people are willing to do once you have given them a taste of your work.

Don’t you wish affiliate marketing was just about sleeping all day and making tons of money? That does not happen in this reality. Those who are willing to push the envelop and get out of their comfort zone can still make a lot of money though.

Affiliate marketing is more than just creating campaigns, optimizing them, and then cashing your checks. You can’t relax in this business and have any chance of making it big. You should always be on the lookout for news you can take advantage of to take your business to the next level. While many gurus want you to believe that making it big in affiliate business involves going to lavish parties and taking 6 months of vacation each year, in reality, you’ll have to work a tad bit harder.

Here are just 5 reasons all affiliates should keep up with the trends in their niche:

Identify new opportunities: you won’t be able to pounce on new opportunities unless you see them coming your way in advance. Let’s take Amazon’s Android store for instance. If and when Amazon decides to give commissions on those apps, there will be some good money to be earned there. You won’t be doing that if you haven’t been paying attention.

Maximize existing opportunities: things change very quickly in some niches. You don’t have to close shop as soon as things dramatically change. You can just adapt and find other ways to get the most out of your niche. Keeping up with the latest news in your niche gives you a better opportunity to do just that.

Plan your exit: nobody likes to accept defeat. Sometimes, market just go away. If you happen to be experiencing that, you better be ready to make your next move. Just because your partners go out of business does not mean you should too.

Find new partners: keeping up with the latest topics trending in your niche, you can figure out the new players in your niche and pounce on opportunities before others do. Companies that are just getting their feet wet in a market are more open to working with marketers and affiliates. That window of opportunity to ask for lucrative commissions and create initial buzz for your partners’ products is small.

Develop your own product: you don’t want to be an affiliate forever, do you? Knowing what’s going on in your market give you ideas about products you can make to take your business to the next level.

Affiliate marketing can technically be done from your bed. But don’t expect amazing results if you intend to take breaks and off-days all the time. People may think of affiliate marketing as an easy business but it’s far from that.
